Activities
More about the activities developed within our project
Our project develops different activities for and with different audiences and age groups. Since we are based on University of São Paulo, East Campus, most of our work is developed with the community that lives in the surroundings. To list some examples, we have already done activities with children from 3 to 6 years old who attended the regional public kindergarten, with the youth that lives in the neighborhood and, at the moment, we are developing some projects with teachers from public high and elementary schools. We also carry out activities within the campus and in other educational spaces.
To summarize, we participate in academic events, develop and apply playful and reflective activities for different audiences, offer courses and workshops, hold documentary exhibitions, write scientific articles, promote vegan picnics, and we are constantly looking for new forms and spaces to discuss animal rights and socioenvironmental issues in the best possible way. We also study and discuss theories and concepts during our weekly meeting, allowing us to have a deeper scientific basis for our formulations and implementations. And, of course, everything is always done with lots of vegan food! :D
Below, see some of our past activities:
In 2018, we developed, with children from 4 to 6 years old, a series of activities that used the representation of the Brazilian jaguar to discuss themes such as: the expansion of agriculture and livestock over our national biomes, deforestation, hunting, the use of animal skins and the problems regarding zoos, interconnecting the topics.
The activities were part of the Scientific Initiation project developed by Mariah Peixoto, one of our current coordinators.
In 2019, we offered a workshop during the “University of São Paulo Science Week”. We discussed, mostly with undergraduate students, the use of animals in scientific practices, presenting some alternative methodologies and raising ethical questions.
We also carry out activities with theatrical games inspired by Augusto Boal's Theatre of the Oppressed. The participants were invited to solve proposed conflicts and think from a non-human perspective.
In 2018, we worked with 4 to 6 years old children discussing the environmental and social impacts of the fashion industry, thinking about some alternatives in favor of conscious consumption. One of the actions aimed to teach about the customization process, allowing them to express themselves creatively and reinvent on old clothes.
The activity was part of the Textiles and Fashion Bachelor's Thesis of one of our members, Lorena Moreno.
In 2017, we developed a vertical garden with teenagers from the surrounding community, encouraging them to reflect on the concept of sustainability. The vegetable garden was made with reused plastic bottles and the youth learned how to plant some edible plants. This was part of Waleska do Valle's Natural Sciences Bachelor's Thesis. The results were published in a Canadian academic journal !
In 2021, we have plans to improve the garden project, doing it on a larger scale!
